Knowing how to build rapport on the phone and why it is so important
Let’s start off by saying how not to build rapport and that is by asking “how are you, today” or chatting about the weather. Knowing how to build rapport, the foundation of effective cold calling is a “relation characterized, by supportive emotional understanding and mutual trust“. Names commonly associated with rapport are agreement, bond, connection, compatibility, empathy, good vibes, harmony, link, relationship, same wavelength, togetherness, and unity. Rapport is establish on 3 different levels Verbally with our words, tone and inflection; non-verbally by body language, eye movement and breathing and finally symbolically by our clothing, car, home and environment. The inflection on our words and the tone in your voice is vital in developing rapport You need to be especially attentive to the tone that you use and also be aware of the tonal response of the individual(s) you are communicating with. Remember your voice can reveal your gender, your nationality, your mood and even your habits. Your voice also carries social information, such as; your manner of speaking can be sarcastic, superior or submissive. We often use a higher-pitched voice to communicate with friends or children, and unconsciously consider deeper voices to have more influence. "Happy Days and the Fonz" Inflections or what I refer to as the “delivery” (the FONZ) which is the patterns or flow of sound created by the arrangement of stressed and unstressed syllables. Applied to your language by manner of speaking in which the loudness or pitch or tone of the voice is modified. Inflections do not give change to any meaning of the word rather more so an understanding to the message being delivered and heard. The good news is... We always establish it Every time we have a conversation, rapport is always there, like it or not. Whether it is with someone you have just met or a long time friend, understanding rapport is the foundation of effective communicating. People will respond to you in the same manner and in the same tone that you give them and it all starts with you not them.
